new york is further evidence of the fact that criminals and mad men do pay attention to the gun laws. that man was not supposed to have access to guns yet he did. in response to your conversation you had with my friend jack kingston, we should not be complacent to go to schools to be assassinated ed but the fac we need to protect our children and guns in schools should be decided at the local level but the mad men and criminals, no amount of gun control and restricting access and tightening the gun laws will stop a criminal from doing what he intends to do but putting an armed guard in the school, local schools feel that's the thing to do, we need to protect our children and one way to do it now. i do strongly believe that decision should be made at the local level but since newtown happened, we need to look at gun control and treating the mentally ill and the influence of the entertainment industry. >> keith, the last word. you have a microphone on. we can hear you groaning. >> sorry. i think the nra argument seems to be gun control isn't perfect. won't stop all crime so let's not h

the only thing happening at the stroke of midnight. more than 400 new laws take effect. some have a major impact including in new hampshire partial birth abortions will be banned. same sex couples will be able to marry in maryland. also registered sex offenders in illinois will no longer be able to dress up like santa or the easter bunny and will not be allowed to hand out candy on halloween. then there are some laws that just make you kind of go, hum. it will now be illegal for employers to require or request social media passwords in several states including maryland, new jersey, and delaware. motorcyclists in illinois can now run a red light if that light fails to change. in florida, your swamp buggy will no longer be considered a motor vehicle. >>> it is about 50/50 right now. i obviously would like to see a deal that would avoid the cliff but it depends on the content of the deal. >> it's a shame and disgrace that we are where we are. the american people are fed up first of all with this process. secondly, with the priorities that are coming forward. >> lawmakers on both sides

changed. the sequester in law would cut efally from defense and nondefense in the discretionary part of the budget. the republicans are trying to say no more cuts in the military spending. in fact, they want increases which would increase cuts elsewhere and that's something the democratic caucus is firmly against. i think the american people are against. so, the difference is over the sequester are not whether or not you put it off, as i understand it, but whether or not you alter it in a way that protects bases in germany and unneeded nuclear weapons and prolongation of the war in afghanistan, and instead make more cuts elsewhere. >> you know what the republicans, particularly conservative republicans, are arguing, and a couple of them rand paul, pat toomey, put out statements after these negotiations shut down tonight and basically said, look, here's what democrats want. democrats want essentially to take more money from the wealthy, from the top few percent, to pay for more government spending that doesn't help us with the deficit. and you hear members of congress, your republican co

, the 112th congress has passed 219 bills that have actually been signed into law by president obama. but a lot of these laws were insignificant, things like the names of post offices. and a slew of bills passed by the house had no chance of passing the senate or getting the president's signature, like repeated attempts to repeal the affordable care act. the influence of the tea party lawmakers have been a clear factor. >> the tea party, which is not even on the screen about a year ago at this time, is a very domineering force. >> one story will be with us, the rise of the tea party. >> regardless of what those elites think, the tea party movement is authentic, grassroots movement. >> i wouldn't sell short these candidates. >> tea party americans, you're winning. >> it's a big mistake not to take it seriously. >> you think the tea party is here to stay? >> absolutely. >> this book was just named the best book of the year. good evening and congratulations. >> thank you, chris. happy to be with you. >> this fiscal cliff was supposed to be so severe, so potentially devastating, there wo

stomach for the political fight for new gun control laws? >> you know, david, i think anybody who was up in newtown, who talked to the parents, who talked to the families, understands that something fundamental in america has to change. and all of us have to do some soul-searching, including me as president. that we allow a situation in which 20 precious, small children are getting gunned down in a classroom. and i've been very clear that an assault rifle ban, banning these high-capacity clips, background checks, that they're a set of issues that i have historically supported and will continue to support. >> can you get it done? >> so the question is, are we going to be able to have a national conversation and move something through congress? i'd like to get it done in the first year. i will put forward a very specific proposal based on the recommendations that joe biden's task force is putting together as we speak. and so this is not something that i will be putting off. but -- >> the nra says it's not going to work. it didn't work before, it's not going to work now. >> my respon

president having signed the fiscal cliff deal into law via auto pen overnight but the next big fight on the debt ceiling debate is just a few weeks away now. mitch mcconnell wrote the president may not want to have a fight over spending the next few months but it's a fight he's going to have, it's a debate the country need. the senator worked with joe biden on the cliff compromise. do you think democrats, your party, is going to have to give significantly more ground on spending in the next battle? >> i certainly hope not. there's still a huge number of people unemployed, 7.5% unemployed. as the republicans even admitted, the problem with the fiscal cliff is you were going to be taking money out of commit by reducing spending too fast and increasing taxes to fast. the same thing holds now. if you take money out by big spend beiing cuts, it's going tt employment. it's not the time to have big spending cuts now. everybody forgets $1.2 trillion in spending cuts we voted last august. as far as i'm concerned, that's enough for now. we're going to have a major fight over the sequester, which allo
